Cooperator of the Year 2025

A picture of Steve Saito and family

Steve Saito and Family recognized as the cooperator of the year 2025!

The Malheur County SWCD proudly recognizes Steve Saito and his family as the 2025 Cooperator of the Year in honor of their commitment to conservation and excellence in agricultural stewardship. For decades, the Saito family has been a cornerstone of Malheur County’s agricultural community, farming in the region with a deep respect for the land, water, and future generations. Through the thoughtful implementation of best management practices (BMPs), Steve Saito has shown how innovation and sustainability can go hand-in-hand with productivity and tradition.  This recognition not only highlights the Saito family’s achievements but also emphasizes the importance of farmer-led conservation in preserving the region’s natural resources. Their dedication supports the SWCD’s mission of promoting the wise use and enhancement of soil, water, and related resources across Malheur County.

Current Featured Project

Invasive Plant Removal -  The Malheur Co. SWCD is partnering with NRCS, a private landowner, and Pheasants Forever to combat invasive species on 3,000 acres of rangeland. By using Rejuvra and Plateau to effectively manage medusahead and cheatgrass, we will restore our ecosystems and prevent the spread of these harmful grasses. Together, we are making a meaningful impact!
